Expert credentials at Cisco include two main certifications: the coveted Cisco Certified Network Expert (CCIE) and the Cisco Certified Design Expert (CCDE). Certification is not a requirement, but you must pass a written exam and a rigorous practical exam to earn one of these qualifications.
As of July 2016, Cisco added an evolving technology domain to its expert-level exams. This new domain targets cloud, network planning capacity, and IoT and accounts for 10 percent of the total exam results. Cisco can change the topics contained in this domain to reflect emerging technologies as they achieve a sufficiently strong commercial interest, potential, and presence that is worth exploring. The company describes this mechanism as a way to support its future-proof certifications so that employers can be sure that those with current credentials are up to date with important new networking technologies.
For many network professionals, reaching CCIE is the highlight of their career. A CCIE has technical expertise and knowledge of Cisco networking products and solutions in one of CCIE's technical areas, which currently includes collaboration, data center, routing and switching, security, service providers, and wireless.
The CCDE identifies experts who design infrastructure solutions for large business environments, including the technological, operational, commercial, and budgetary aspects of a project.
