Duties and Responsibilities of the VMware Administrator

VMware administrators create, deploy, and manage the network and server infrastructure that is based on VMware products such as vSphere, vRealize, or vSAN. At the beginning of a project, they work with other specialists and engineers to create a suitable system project for customers, after which they install and configure software and hardware components at customer sites. Despite these resource intensive tasks, VMware administrators spend much of their time on maintenance and troubleshooting to ensure maximum performance. While they mostly work on a computer with occasional trips to customer locations, they can remain on duty overnight or on weekends to provide ongoing system support.

Duties and Responsibilities of the VMware Administrator

Implement infrastructure

VMware administrators create and install computing infrastructure, including hardware, servers, and virtual machines, using a VMware environment such as vSphere. They then configure it for production by creating user accounts, controlling access to networks, and managing storage and security settings.

Perform maintenance

The software must be maintained regularly and it is the responsibility of VMware administrators to monitor client systems on a daily basis and identify problem areas. They proactively design and install application updates, versions, and patches. Less frequently, they also update drivers, servers, and firmware with newer technologies.

Provide technical support

In order to provide technical support to customers at all times, VMware administrators can remain on duty during irregular hours. They must respond promptly to customer-reported issues, conduct a root cause analysis, and go through various test scenarios for complete resolution.

Recommend solutions

VMware administrators are heavily involved in planning the customer's infrastructure. This involves collecting data from the system, researching possible solutions, developing and presenting your design ideas, and carefully evaluating the suggestions of others. In addition, they assess industry trends and assist in the implementation of standards and best practices.

Create documentation

Those in this role must create and maintain documentation for all system-related processes and procedures for which they are responsible, including project requirements, changes and updates, implementation plans, and support tickets. Another cumbersome paperwork task is creating summary reports for clients or internal management.
