Computer Network Technician Nature of Work

Computer network technicians create and maintain computer networks used by commercial, educational, governmental, and healthcare institutions. In networks that connect desktop computers, users can send email and share data, computer applications, and Internet connections. The more institutions set up computer networks, the greater the demand for qualified computer network technicians.

Computer network technicians, also known as computer network engineers or network specialists, should be familiar with the current standards and terminology used for larger local area networks (LAN) and wide area networks (WAN). They often help plan their employers' computer networks and then implement the planned networks. In most cases, network engineers manage existing computer networks and troubleshoot problems.

Planning a computer network involves analyzing the costs and requirements of a company and choosing the appropriate media (e.g. twisted pair copper cable, coaxial cable, fiber optic cable, wireless) for a specific situation. Computer network technicians can also recommend suitable network addressing systems, suitable designs for different network configurations and suitable connection devices.

Implementing a computer network involves designing and monitoring business plans to meet certain requirements, such as account management and security. Much of the work involved in implementing a network involves installing, configuring, and resolving conflicts between various hardware components used in the network, e.g. B. Network adapter.

Managing and fixing problems with a network involves identifying and fixing problems with network performance. Technicians identify problems that are common among computer network technicians. Network components such as cards, cables, and other related hardware. They also create disaster recovery plans for various situations in the event of a network failure.

Computer network technicians not only need to know the relevant computer and network terminology, protocols and hardware, but also have to know the required software, including various operating systems such as Novell NetWare, Unix and Windows. You also need to understand basic models of network architecture such as peer-to-peer and client-server.

Computer network technicians need self-discipline and the ability to reconcile a variety of tasks. A technician must be able to spend long hours debugging a program on a keyboard, and must be skillful and patient in the structure of a complex cable network.

Because network technicians often provide technical support to network users, they must be able to help non-technical people understand and use complex devices and software. In addition to technical expertise, employers often require network technicians to excel in verbal and written communication and to have good interpersonal skills.
