What does a System Administrator do?

A system administrator, often shortened to 'sysadmin' or simply managed, is responsible for controlling the network. You will probably not be expected to correct the tables for many users, but you will be sure that everything works in the big picture. You will be responsible for network security, traffic management, a safe way to return if something bad happens, and much more.

If you are a systems administrator, you can still interact with end users. After all, you are the person who set up the "system", whose personal accounts contain the rights of that account and make sure no one is overfilled without the account. This means that there are many soft skills that a good system administrator should have.

Soft skills
1. Effective communication
Learning to listen and explain something in a simple way will be very important for your position as a system administrator. As we said in the introduction, you will be in direct contact with the IT department and end users. Learning how to interact with these groups and think about different levels of IT understanding can be difficult, but it's worth it.

2. Think proactively rather than reactively
Many people think of system administrators as soon as something breaks. But a really good system administrator has set something up, so they won't let it break in the first place. Much of the work is done behind the scenes: making sure you have a well-thought-out IT infrastructure is what sets good system administrators apart.

3. Flexibility
Finally, there will be times when things are broken. And unfortunately, it could be a Friday night. If the system administrator and the company lose dollars every second, the system shuts down so you can work late. Likewise, there may be days when you think there isn't much to do. So being flexible will be important for a system administrator job.
